Subject: O'Neill as ingenue

I just watched the interview with Mr. O'Neill on 60 Minutes and I was surprised at his naivete. Apparently when he agreed to take the position as Secretary of the Treasury (Exchequer down your way IIRC) he actually thought that he was dealing with people who would engage in discussions and arrive at conclusions based on the information available from experts. And he appears to have been genuinely surprised to discover that almost everyone else was already committed to a very narrow agenda. Even more evidence of his idealism was shown when he was asked what he expected in the way of personal attacks from the Bushies and it looked like the idea had never occurred to him that anyone would be upset with him because he told the truth.

Those people have no use for the truth.
