Hi Ralph

You are right in that many of BV's characteristics have been applied by BV's detractors. I merely followed, ad hoc, so to speak, when a theme developed.

It was particularly interesting on Lotu Forum with that character who eventually became Maximum Harm.

Itlod has revealed himself in a most bizarre frame and his posts carry much oif the writer's inner self, while I tried to maintain some sort of mischievous imperviousness to BV while in debate with Itlod.

Of course, it was Tjampita who first got into debate with Itlod and it was he who came up with the Itlod name. BV went into bat for Tjampita, always enjoying a good stirring fight with words, and ended up carrying the bat all the way back to the pavilion.

I don't know why Tjampita left the fight to BV. Maybe he enjoyed the joust [as I would were I he] from the pavilion.

But we managed to bring 'em nau' round to some sort of civility, and Marsian has dropped so many of his pompous notions about himself.

A former letter-writer to The Australian newspaper, Larry Foley, wrote from Townsville under eight names and all of those characters were published routinely, and only after Larry's untimely death in 1989 did we fellow readers become aware of this fantastic personality fanfare. Larry created many debates, mostly by creating a storm among his characters who argued with one another for weeks until he managed to carry the letters page almost all by himself.

I found after Larry's death that I had been engaged in debate with five of Larry's characters!

My first nom de plume was 'The late Larry Foley' which I used on a South African forum. My greatest character was BMFO [Big Mouth From Oz] and he created havoc among stuffy conservatives and pompous gits who were all so serious about themselves.

BMFO lived in the hills near Woodenbong and was 'tall and tough' and had hundreds of 'sheilas' to do his beckoning. He was a revolting yet lovable old fool and eventaully won all his adversaries to his side with nothing but good-natured crap. Yet BMFO had his Itlods!

We all have our Itlods but we dare not take them seriously or we have lost the plot altogether.

BTW, Ralph, my eldest son has completed his skydiving courses on Sunshine Coast and we have just four days to get to Qld and to celebrate.

The big question is: Can we make it on time?

See you, Ralph, in Redbank?
