Buff,

A Subclavian Groshong Catheter is a Port that's threaded into the Superior Vena Cava(large Vein in the heart). The Subclavian is a vein as is the Jugular.
Groshong catheters have a unique catheter tip with a valve which stays closed during neutral pressure, opens outward during positive pressure(infusion, flush)and opens inward on negative pressure(blood draw).People that require long term Antibiotics(in my case),long term Chemo or Heparin which is a blood thinner have them placed. They can draw blood from them, which is an eerie sensation. You can actually feel the blood sucking up into the tube. The only draw back is:They can become infected,no matter how good hygenical care you give.Mine became infected with a moderate growth of Klebsiella Pneumoniae. In order to place these, the patient must be in the Trendelenberg position(Freidrich Trendelenberg 1844-1924).That is where the head is lower than the feet. The surgeon makes a puncture to secure them. The reason you are placed in that position is:1)increase the volume of blood in the veins of the neck and upper extremities (during puncture of the internal or external jugular or subclavian vein for placement of a "central line").

2)decrease the pressure of the cerebrospinal fluid in the lower spinal cord and cauda equina (as for treatment of lumbar dural tear). If I don't understand a word or meaning of a word,I look it up or ask.I love learning new things. No George and I are not an item.I live in Oklahoma,if you want to know the town Iam moving to then please get me on email.
