Subject: Bush and Cheney are not America
In reply to: Socialist Sally 's message, "What makes America so belligerent?" on 12:54:48 03/09/02 Sat

In the last election, more people cast their votes for the Gore/Lieberman ticket of the Democratic Party than for the Bush/Cheney ticket of the Republican Party. Bush is President because our Electoral College system for selecting the President allows odd things like that to happen. But it's a real stretch to say that the Bush-Cheney wing of the Republican Party represents the feelings of the general population of the US.

At the present moment, due to the destruction of the World Trade Center, President Bush has a very high approval rating. This is almost entirely due to a general reluctance to disagree with the President when our nation has been attacked and we have soldiers in combat. It does not mean that everything that Bush says will come to pass.

The announcement that the Bush team is considering the "conventionalization" of nuclear weapons has been met with great dismay in some sectors here and is likely to be met with disapproving glances by many of our Allies. It may be that this is just a psychological ploy to keep people like Saddam Hussein guessing and wondering what might happen if they start getting greedy. But whatever it is, it is not a reflection of how everyone here feels.
