No one thinks this is better than Hitchcock's original so why see it? One answer is obvious if you goal is to see Viggo Mortensen act -- He has a lot of screen time.

If you need another reason, if you've seen the original, you can see that he's added more to the character than John Gavin did. He's made the character very sexy. This becomes apparent from the opening shot with Viggo naked in bed with partially dressed Anne Heche. Gavin wasn't naked in the original! There are other subtle character revealing additions which (according to the audio commentary on the DVD) were Viggo's improv such as showing his sexual attraction to Juliana Moore's character when he touches her.

If I was going to own a copy of Psycho, I'd buy the original. The black and white works better for atmosphere and Vince Vaughn is no Anthony Perkins. But it's worth renting Gus Van Sant's version. It is so faithful to the original, it can't help but maintain the pleasure of the original story and it has all the extras which Viggo's performance bring.
