This is a very authentic film about addiction rehabilitation. Maybe too authentic and not enough Hollywood which is why more people haven't seen it. It's worth viewing because of its strong message about addiction and rehab, but it's also funny and well performed.

Sandra Bullock as the alcohol addicted main character is very good. Steve Buscemi, as a counsellor, gets through the entire film without killing anyone. Dominic West, as the unrehabilitated boyfriend, is an actor who I'd like to see again. Viggo Mortensen plays a professional baseball player who needs rehab not only from drug but also sexual addiction.

There's a tentative romance between Viggo and Bullock's character but it is not Hollywood. No one gets the girl in the end - just a lot of great acting to show the attraction. And more great acting to show how difficult rehab is.

Another example of good acting from Viggo occurs when his character receives adulation from young baseball fans but the father recognizes Viggo's character is in rehab. His reluctance and embarassment are so well done.

For me, this film showed how good an actor he is because of how deeply he can inhabit different characters. Some of the production people in Lord of the Rings have talked about what an athlete Viggo is. That is no surprise if you see this movie. He's believable as a pro ball player. And he displays his ability to do accents. I saw 28 Days not long after seeing A Perfect Murder without realizing he was in it. I recognized Viggo's voice before I recognized his face. His character comes across as looking and behaving so differently I didn't immediately recognize it was the same actor. I was amazed.
