Bushfire general situation reported at 1545hrs Sunday 19 January 2003
(Issued by Australian Federal Police)

ACT Policing has confirmed that a third person has died as a result of the current bushfires. The 37-year-old woman was found in her Duffy home this morning. Police are investigating the three deaths. At this stage Emergency Services have all fires under control although there are some areas still smouldering. The fires of most concern today at CIT Weston, Mt Rogers, Kambah, and from Banks to Tharwa have all been brought under control. There are no immediate threats to property although there are still some spot fires in grassland on the Southside.

Members of the public will continue to see heavy smoke across some areas of Canberra for some time and they may also see fire crews conducting mopping-up operations in their suburbs. As the ACT is now entering a recovery phase, Territory control has been handed to Chief Police Officer, John Murray, from Peter Lucas-Smith. This recovery phase will be coordinated from the Winchester Police Centre.

At this stage Duffy and Chapman residents are allowed to return to their homes for limited periods. Residents must show identification at road blocks.

Police are urging all members of the community to be patient at road blocks as there may be delays in admitting people through. They are also warning residents to be aware that power lines and trees are down on some roads and they therefore need to proceed with caution when travelling in affected areas. Assessments of the number of properties that have been lost in the fires are continuing.
ACTEW AGL crews are close to reconnecting power in some suburbs that have experiences outages.
