. . . 'cuz that would make you one of them, I suppose.

I think it's partly that people (okay, I'll include myself) are self-centered. But also, some folks, it seems, don't realize how easy it is to hurt others emotionally through their own actions. They do things without thinking of the consequences, especially when trying to impress someone else or when in a group and either that "gang mentality" gets going or they let themselves follow someone else's bad leadership. My son just had one of those happen. He's such a great kid, but doesn't think for himself sometimes.

Also, I read the bit about you not going to church anymore and found it sad. I don't know if it's possible - either feasible in general or if you're up to it - but I really think THEY need YOU. Not "the church" per se, but the other youth. I'm sure it depends on how progressive the church is and the specific youth pastor, but I can sure see a need for Christian support of gay people, especially young guys. Maybe, and again of course I don't know much about your situation, a different church might help? If you have some friends who can support you at church? I admit being totally naive about the politics of this, so maybe it's more of a wishful thought than a realistic thing.

Well, of course your safety and sanity do need to be your priority, so take care of yourself!
