In the wake of Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, Americans are flocking to the Maritimes in search of safe, peaceful vacations. So despite rainy and cold weather for much of May and June, tourism numbers in Cape Breton are up slightly over this time last year. "We are very pleased with the start of this season," said Janet Connor, general manager of Tourism Cape Breton. "The circumstances that are leading many Americans to Cape Breton are unfortunate, but we are pleased to welcome them with safe, secure hospitality."

There are also fewer people travelling the skies this year. Airport activity is down more than 10 per cent so far this season, while air visitors are down 15 per cent. "Our numbers are up over last year, but we are getting less advance reservations," said Patti Johnston, assistant manager of the Maritime Inn in Port Hawkesbury. "People are out there driving this year and we are getting a lot of off-the-road traffic. There may be a fear factor following Sept. 11."

Americans also feel they are on friendly ground in the Maritimes, because of the support shown to American passengers whose planes were diverted to the region after the attacks, according to tourism officials.
