Do you have 7-11 convenience stores there, Rick? Well, today is 7/11 and we've talked about stores being closed on Sundays, so I thought this might be interesting.
-----------
If you love 7-11 as much as I do (and I think you do) take a minute today to buy yourself a Slurpee and learn a little about the history of our favorite convenience store chain.
It all started in 1927, when the Southland Ice Company (on the initiative of a single, brilliant employee) began to sell bread, milk and other groceries off the dock at night and on Sundays when the grocery stores were closed. This idea took off and became the "Tote'm" stores, thus named because customers would tote their purchases away (as opposed to lugging?). In 1946, the Southland company wisely changed the name of the stores to 7-11, to reflect the radical new expanded hours.
There are over 5800 7-11 stores operating in the US and Canada. Globally, there are many, many more.
Some 7-11 milestones:
1964 First coffee to go!!
1966 Introduction of Slurpee
1969 “Oh Thank Heaven for 7-Eleven” campaign introduced
1984 Super Big Gulp introduced. (WAIT! I know you are thinking, super big gulp... so what!?! when was the Big Gulp introduced? Oddly, the 7-11 corporate web site does not tell us.)
1988 Big Bite Hot Dogs introduced (they had hot dogs before, but they were generic weiners, not BIG BITE. I would also like to know when nachos with pump cheez were introduced -- definitely a milestone)
2000 20,000th store opens (Tokyo)
So treat yourself to some 7-11 goodness, a pack of smokes, a BIG BITE hot dog, a Slurpee or a Big Gulp. Maybe an energy drink or a girlie mag! Or a Sparks!
THANK HEAVEN FOR 7-11!
------------
From the mistress of 2headedcat.com. I think "Sparks" is something like beer+coffee+energy drink = scary! My hubby was up to about 4 Super Big Gulps per day during our college years. Diet - so she's "well preserved" - or something. I loved the microwaved burritos, mostly because of the yummy sauce in the little packets 7-11 had (has?)
