A father was very worried about his son because the son's almost 16 years old, and still didn't act like a man in the father's eye. So, the father went to a temple to visit a monk, who's famous for his wisdom, and asked for his help.

After he told the monk about his worry, the monk said, "I understand your worry and I think I can help you and your son. Please leave your son with us in the temple for three months, and I will do my best to make your son a real man. However, you mustn't visit him or talk to him during the whole three months." Of course, the father agreed.

After three months, the father went to the temple to visit his son and the monk. The monk asked him to go to the practice field to see his son. When he went to the field, his son was having a prctice fight with his martial art teacher. The son tried his best to defend the teacher's attact, but he was always pushed down by the teacher's offense. Until the sixteenth time of the son's falling down, the monk asked the father what he thought about his son now.

The father said he felt ashamed because his son could not defend himself very well. Then, the monk answered, "I'm very sorry that you only see the win or lose on the appearance. Didn't you see your son's courage and perseverance through his constant standing back up and facing his teacher no matter how many times he was pushed down? Those are the true characteristics of a real man."
