I've been doing this since I got out of grad school 17 years ago, and I'm really very tired of it! People still want books, but they want computers too, but don't seem to want to pay for it. Things really have changed since I started out. It seems like we have to offer bigger and better kids programs just to justify our existence! It's nuts.

I'm considering moving to something, well, non-professional. I don't really want a career anymore, I just want to go to work and come home at night, no committes, no conferences, no nuthin'. Just the paycheck please! I had a talk with Dan about this the other day...he actually seemed pretty agreeable. (this would most likely involve a pay cut, plus I do get some reasonably nice benefits right now).

Sorry to sound so bitter, this simple question hit a nerve! I love libraries and have used them all my life (and always will).

I'm sorry...didn't mean to hit a nerve for you. My SIL is the librarian at a middle school and she has the same complaints that you do.
