I am sure we have hunted in some of the same places! I know some places in Northern Nevada where iron stained dirt is a good indicator, but I also know many places also where iron staining is absent or not really important. Also, I know several commercial open pit mines with signifigant iron staining and significant gold - but the gold is very small, too small to see with a detector - but good for heap leaching. I am sure you have seen the Florida Canyon Mine across from Rye Patch - thats one example. To my experience, quartz float concentrations, as a general rule, are more important than iron colored soils here in Northern Nevada.

In many mountain ranges all across our state there are places with lots of red iron staining. Probably most have no gold, probably some have fine gold mineralization, and who knows, maybe a few have really rich placers.

Right now I am doing a little research, and just waiting for the warmer weather next year!

Reno Chris
