Yo Ralph, when I threw in that comment regarding "personal bias" I knew it would bring some response! For years I have driven, and liked, Chevy pickup trucks. As a wedding gift, Hawkeye recently bought me a new Ford Ranger. My Chevy-loving friends all feel that I have "gone down in the world;" my Ford-loving friends all feel that I finally own "a real truck." So, which is better, Ford trucks, or Chevy trucks? Does "personal bias" play a roll in most people's opinions? Yep! And, as regards which make or model of detector a person likes, I see this all the time at the Gold Shows. People will walk into the auditorium, and visually scan the signs on the dealer's booths. One can often judge their interests, or biases, by watching the reactions on their faces, and then note how they "zero in" on those booths which draw their attention. It is amazing how often I will hear someone say "I wouldn't own a [detector make "X"] if they gave it to me free and paid me to use it" and then to later hear another person say "I wouldn't use ANY make of detector except [that same detector make "X"]". So, obviously, bias DOES influence our decisions in life. As far as the on-going MXT versus X-5 "controversies," as repeatedly mentioned, I eagerly await authoritative in-ground reports from experienced users of both machines from widespread areas. Or, better yet, I would love to have an X-5 user bring one to my house for some serious "fussing." With 62 Field Test reports published on various metal detectors, I do have some small knowledge of doing unbiased detector comparisons. And, yes, I still have Troy's phone number, should I decide to use it (grin) HH Jim
