Hi Again,

There is a a way to tell how the Infinium is working without taking the case apart. That is to look at the signals coming from the coil. since a scope is needed for either test, I would recommend a simple evaluation without taking the detector apart.

The evaluation does require a scope, several turns of wire and a simple resistor. One can make a coil maybe 6" in diam, having 10 to 20 turns. Just connect the ends of the coil across a 1 k resistor (other values can be used) and then attach the scope across the resistor coil combination.

Careful observation of the signal will reveal a lot about how the Infinium or any other PI works. The scope response will show if different pulse lengths are used. This can be seen by looking at both the positive and the negative signals seen on the screen. If there is only one pulse length used, then the pulse as seen either positive or negative will be the same size as the previous one.

The spacing between the samples could also display a little different technique that might be implemented. If anybody has the equipment and an Infinium I would appreciate a pic of the scope results.

Reg
