Subject: Re: Iron discrimination... for prospecting?
In reply to: Minelabmayer 's message, "Iron discrimination" on 21:17:06 07/05/02 Fri

Mark, are we to assume that you intend to use that machine for prospecting, with the hope that the iron discrimination system will REJECT iron? If so, permit me to offer a bit of contstructive criticism: NEVER use iron REJECTION when prospecting for gold, because smaller gold nuggets will ALSO be rejected, even at the lower "nail level" disc. Sorry, but facts are facts. To build on what Jim Straight stated in his response, there is a world of difference betweeen iron rejection and iron identification. Iron identification does just that, WITHOUT rejecting small gold. Iron rejection rejects iron, AND small gold. Of the machines mentioned, the Lobo Super Track has two modes, prospecting, and coin-style "motion" discrimination, which rejects undesirable metals. That mode is great for it's intended use, but that intended use was NOT for gold prospecting. Oh, sure, a motion disc. machine WILL find LARGER nuggets, but will miss smaller ones. Case in point: I guy I know was coin hunting at a CA motherlode miner's camp that was reputedly used for a few months in 1850. He encountered a target which gave a "good" ("dig me!!!") signal, and the ID meter read out at "quarter dollar." He was sure he had found a quarter lost in 1850. Nope.... it was a lousey 3/4 ounce nugget. Boy was he disappointed..... (not really :)) Hope this helps; HH Jim
