Unfortunately, Compass had some financial problems possibly due to a warehouse fire and John Earle, the chief engineer, was not able to completely work out the bugs on the standard 9-inch elliptical DD coil designed for both the AU 52 and 2000. As Mike has posted, some coils may have been better than others.

I had an AU-52 and got rid of it as I will not put up with a coil problem. A friend of mine has the AU-2000 and is very successfully finding gold with it, but it is a little noisy. If a good coil can be found, the AU's still are good, not only for nugget-hunting small gold as noted around drywash piles; but with a full-range "trash-out' discrimination mode also good for coinhunting.

I have an early serial numbered Compass Gold Scanner Pro which I still use as a back-up and still even use as my primary-machine in some areas.
