The "stick" described above has no technical aspect in the method. It just allows you to steady the compass and move it slowly so that it's easier to see the slightest deflections of the needle when it enters the magnetic field of the ferrous object. Just wanted to clear that up.... 8^)
I've even seen a couple used that had the slide-stick routed and polished with a groove for the compass to move back and forth in. Who says high-tech is always best, eh?
