Subject: I think I have it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In reply to: Z 's message, "Re: How bout another hint?" on 06:56:58 04/03/02 Wed

Today has been a rather bad day for me - healthwise - so I have had to sit around dragging down OČ and trying to deal with blood pressure that keeps dropping through the bottom of my feet as well as swollen and extremely painful feet and legs. While I sat there sucking up something I used to take for granted, I allowed my mind to use the blackboard I keep there to ponder this puzzle. I have Purposefully not read her post above because I have a feeling it contains the answer. I want to do this on my own. If I am wrong, she can tell me in a reply. ONLY after I find out if I got it right or wrong will I read her post.

Bunny gave us these hints:

1. The letter "I" is the sole remaining letter at the end. (It had to be either "A" or "I" as these two are the only single-letter words in standard conversational common English I know.

2. The initial letter is an "S" (from her hint).

3. Also from her hint, the final letter is "G."

These suggest to me that the word she seeks is a gerund - a verb form that ends in "...ING." If, I am correct, and I think I am, that leaves us with this:

S ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ I N G

I began trying letter combinations with this model in front of me. I knew that there had to be at least one more vowel in this word. There are few words in English I know that use all consonants and they are not normally considered to be "standard" English. More often, they are bastardized abbreviations of longer words (e.g.: "bs" and "Ms"). Since Bunny did not mention that the "S," "G" or "I" were repeated in the words I assumed, for starters, that these letters were not repeated in the word she sought.

I sucked in oxygen and contemplated words. Finally, I hit on "Start." The gerund form of "start" contains only wight letters, but... VIOLA! I tried another word that was similar... STARTLE!

There it was.

I think the answer is STARTLING!!

STARTLING
STARTING
STARING
STRING
STING
SING
SIN
IN
I

Am I right?

Bunny, or anyone who has read her post, please let me know. I won't read her post until someone does.

It's a personal challenge thing for me now.
