After I did all the mental gymnastics I outlined above, I re-read Bunny's second hint and only then noticed her use of quotation marks around "starts." I hadn't noticed that when first read it, but now that I think I have found the word, I beleive I now understand her cryptic second post about the puzzle.

That still threw me somewhat because "STARTING" only had eight (not "winght") letters but I could see how to reduce that word one letter at a time and still have common English language words remaining. After that, it was simply finding one more letter to complete the word. I knew of no words in English that have a vowel after the second "T", so it was a fairly short process of eliminating possible consonants between the "T" and "I." I started with "B" then "C" then "D" until I realized what I was seeing before my eyes. I jumped straight from "D" to "L" and I knew I had it... especially when I realied that removing the "L" gave me "starting," where I had started my way on the pathway to the final solution.

I enjoyed this tremendously, Bunny, even if I am wrong. Whether or not it is the answer you sought, "STARTLING" works too. I am too tired and weakened by the health episodes of this afternoon to try for another word that fits the parameters tonight. Just tell me if I am wrong and I will not read your post. I intend to get this one on my own.
