I told you that I would be among the first to cry "FOIUL" if I found our government was trying to use the situation in Iraq to seize control of Iraq's oil for a few wealthy Americans. Honey and Deb have intimated that such is the real motivation behind the was recently fought and won in Iraq. Frankly, everything I have seen and studied inidcates that their complaints and those of the partisan politicians leading that chorus are factually little more than sour grapes based on classism.
While Honey and Deb were looking eastward to Baghdad, they missed something that happened in Washington, D. C. last week. It seems that all 25 members - Democrat and Republicans alike - of the Senate International Relations Committeee voted unanimously recently on a committee resolution putting Mexico on notice that any future Mexican immigration reform policiy decisions would or should be tied directly to Mexico allowing US investment firms from buying into the Mexican National Oil Reserve and their Constitutionally mandated state-run business for exploration and production of Mexican oil.
This was not reported widely on CNN or even FOX News, but it is very real. What I find amazing is that many of the likes of Tom Daschle et al who have been leading the "It's all about Iraqi Oil" chorus are among members of that influential Senate committee.
I don't like Vicente Fox and many of the mindless policies of the Mexican government, but just who are we to tell them they HAVE to sell out their national resources to fat cat political contributors of EITHER party? We don't have that right and we need to tell those trying to pull off this grab in our name to stop it NOW. All of this data is readily verified via a visit to the Senate Committees reports on line as well as Thomas and the National Register. NOW I believe there is an intended oil grab, but it wasn't who, or where, others thought, or claimed, it was happening.
