Subject: Special Operations Executives in Malaya 1941

On December 8th, 1941, WW2 reached the shores of Malaya and Thailand when the Japanese invaded. This was just one day after their attack on Pearl Harbour. The Malays were warned a year earlier but hoped the day would not come.

The British Government had started to prepare for the imminent attack and began recruiting some of the local tin miners and other engineers into a newly developed secret organisation of volunteers tasked with espionage and sabotage. They mainly consisted of British and Australians and most were trained in Singapore or at Birch House on the island of Penang, in Malaya. Their knowledge of mining equipment enabled them, in the event of an invasion, to sabotage the machinery in a way that would prevent the Japanese from using it but could be relatively easy to repair after the invasion was over.

However, these engineers were ill prepared for the atrocious acts that these bloodthirsty barbarians would perform. Many suffered horrific deaths in the first few days. Several were beheaded or disembowelled. Some bodies were recovered after the war but many were never found and remain buried in the jungles of Malaya and Thailand. Only a few have memorials and many are not even acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

I first became aware of these SOE agents after reading the book "Lavinia's War" by Claire Gartrell. It covers the life of my dear cousin, Lavinia Florence Coates, who was a nurse in Malaya in 1941. She began a romance with a tin miner named George Powell, who was one of the recruited SOE agents, codenamed "Conrad". Lavinia last saw him in mid November 1941, when he was ordered to go to Thailand on a secret mission. She never saw him again and despite many years of searching and contacting government organisations, she never knew if he survived.

In honour of George and his fellow SOE agents, I decided to build a website as a tribute to these forgotten heroes. I named it "Operation Dickens" as this was the first secret mission I became aware of and appears to be operation that George was ordered to undertake. It is believed he was beheaded about the 9th December and was probably one of the first casualties of that conflict. I later discovered that this was just one of many operations that were collectively given the name of "Operation Cleeves". A book has recently been published under that title by Kathleen Reid-Smith, which details many of the operations carried out by these SOE agents.

The website is still in early development but I aim to provide a large resource of original documents, maps, photos and family details of these individuals. I welcome your comments and would appreciate any help or information you may have to offer.

The website can be viewed at www.beanweb.net/opdickens/index.htm
