Subject: Selling Out?

Why does everyone think Liz sold out with the release of her recent album? Believe it or not, I bought the new album because I like her song "Extraordinary" which I heard on ESPN promoting the Women's NCAA Tournament. I read on Amazon and other places that she sold out with this new album, so I also bought her first album and will make my own comparisons. I just think she is evolving musically. I don't think she sold out. Anyone want to put in their 2 cents?

I do not think she is selling out. She is a great songwriter and performer, end of story. I just saw her live at Philly, and she was great. I think I like her even more.

Phair, IMHO, did not sell out because she made an LP alternarock freaks hated----she sold out by encouraging
the sexual objectification by sports networks such as ESPN.....

Her record company is probably the one who granted permission to ESPN.

I am glad for Liz that she's finally getting more main-stream recognition and hope she makes shitloads of money for her son and family! Liz fans know, nobody deserves it more than she.

Just because we early Liz fans don't need the "wall to wall" studio effect doesn't mean all her charm is lost in an attempt to continue doing what she loves.

My wife and I heard her at a 1500-person venue March 6, and she was perfect--perfect and phenomenal even before she signed autographs for 20 minutes following her encore.

I think the lyrics of the new album are every bit as imaginative, witty and unique as that of, say, Whip-Smart.

the trend of analyzing every musician or band to find out whether or not they've sold-out is a big waste of time. to me, its about the music, the lyrics and the live performances--the rest is gossip. we may never know if Liz "sold-out" or not, but who cares? what matters is if you relate to the music. if you do, listen to it; if you don't, don't--your not going to change her or anyone by complaining. good music isn't written by conforming to people's ideas of what good music is.
