Liz Phair purists will tell you Exile is the album to get. In my opinion, if you like the new album, go run and get WhiteChocolateSpaceEgg. It's my personal favorite and far more polished than Exile or Whip Smart.

Exile is your best bet. If you can find it, Juvenalia is fantastic, but it's not a full album. I greatly disagree about Whitechocolatespaceegg being good much less one of the best. It's okay, but Exile is the best. Whipsmart is second. What you really need is Phairities. It's a compilation a fan made of random live appearances from Liz along with some songs from her initial recordings. It's absolutely fantastic. You can't find it in stores, though. You've gotta check around long-time with Liz Phair fans.

I relistened to it last night, and my opinion remains the same: If you like the new CD, you'll love WhiteChocolateSpaceEgg. Very well produced, very good songs.

I agree that if you like this CD, you'll like Spaceegg. They're both too polished, although Spacegg sounded much more like Liz (lyrically, musically, and even just the sound of her voice).

Exile in Guyville, however, is by far Liz's best album. Actually, it's one of the best albums of all time. Whipsmart doesn't quite live up to Exile, but it's still decent--still very much Liz.

Being realistic, I don't know what people who are just now discovering Liz through her new CD will think of "Exile"- I don't know if they'll think it's her best album. In fact, i would bet that the new fans who are only familiar with this new CD would find her older material a bit harder to get into.
So, really, I think it *is* logical to purchase WCSE (although i am not particularly fond of it, or the new album, either) next and work your way back to her first album, that way the difference in sonics will be less jarring, seeing as her albums have gotten more polished with each new release.
And once you've gotten all her albums don't forget to check out her Girlysound songs!

I have never bought a Liz album until the new one, though I've always been familiar with her (I liked the "Double Dutch" song). I really dig this new LP and was shocked to read all the scathing reviews. Being a musician and songwriter myself, I know the material is of the highest quality and the production is excellent. Seeing that the reviews all said "Exile" was her career peak, I bought it. All I can say is that it's VERY hard to get into if you fell in love with Liz's sweet, smooth voice, and catchy choruses. I'll try WCSE next, but in any case I hope Liz keeps it up -- I look forward to the next one!

yeah i think the idea of working backwards through her cds would be a good idea for you... but i don't see why the hell you even like the new cd to begin with if you ask me it isnt liz phair at all. her new label, matrix, is the same as AVRIL LAVIGNE'S!! which makes me want to vomit just at the thought liz wanted to switch to it and let them write some of her songs

Hey I'm new to Liz I like her song "Why can't I?" and I want to know if her latest cd is any good, and if any of her other cd's are any good. Thank u.

Even though most of liz phair's old fans will tell you the new album sucks if you like "why can't i" you will probably like her new album.

Oh allright. Howcome liz's fans don't like the new album? Is it that different from her old stuff?

Oooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh yeah, it's different! I like Girlysounds and Exile, and I do like the new album, but for different reasons. The new album might as well be by a different person.

It's almost like the difference between really old Ministry (circa '82) and new Ministry.

Honestly, Exile in Guyville is Liz's best album, with Whip-Smart and Spageegg in a tie for second. The new one is great, too. Just not as great. I adore Liz and I just saw her perform at the Filmore SF on Monday. She mostly played stuff off of Guyville. The new sound is far too polished and not very lyrically substaintial and I think she knows that now, seeing as how she mostly played stuff from her first album. Someone who is discovering Liz through her new album can try to appreciate the first three, but they might not have much luck (Love/Hate is probably the best off the new one. It sounds like a Who song). If you really want to appreciate Liz and enjoy her NEW stuff, work backwards, buy Spaceegg, then Whip-Smart, the Guyville. It's the best bet.
BTW, it's a great show, if you ever have the chance to see her play go, it's amazing. There were two encores, and the second closed the show with Liz singing "Flower" with 3 audience members doing the background melody part. She's an amazing performer.
