yuck - what a fluke you were liz! maybe all the producers you ****ed in chicago helped you write your first album, and now the b***es you're hooking up w/in L.A. are convincing you to use their weak hooks and idiotic lyrics...you still can't sing a note and have no stage presence, all the underwear photos in the world won't change that.

How much stage presence do you have jellico?

Jellico--

The point of this board is for fans of Liz to discuss her. You're obviously not a fan--you lack the taste and sophistication to appreciate Liz. Buzz off.

Jellico,
AGREED! The new album SUCKS! Has Liz now become a teeny-bopper, bubblegum artist? She can't sing worth a damn, and what's with the pop hooks? OK, Liz, we get it - you like getting laid by young guys with no jobs and no money. Gee, I wonder how long THAT novelty will last. Word on the next album is that it will be about sugardaddies and how they can't get it up, but since they're loaded, it's OK. Maybe the next album will show an evolution instead of a devolution. YOUNG GUYS RULE!!!!!!!!!(LOL!!!)

It would stand to reason that anyone who creates a posting-name from the main characters of the ridiculous show "Cats" would have questionable judgement with regards to Ms. Phair's recent album. (Though originally from a TS Eliot book of poems...a "Jellico Cat" will forever now be known as as a "singing and dancing cat" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's questionably creative attempt at the modern-day musical.)

I would hope in this day and age where MOST of us do have a college education that we realize artists don't create their work based on their audience's idea of what their art should be (save a few exceptions who are promoted as "producer-based" groups like Backstreet Boys, etc...) Artists create what they create because it is part of who they are AT THE TIME...whether we like them or not.

Clearly, you are not grooving with Liz this time 'round. Perhaps you can form a "bummed-about-Liz Phair's-new-album" support group with your other kitty friends, Skimbleshanks and Rumpleteaser. Or maybe, Old Deuteronomy can help you find the heavy-side layer like he did for Grizabella, the Glamour Cat.

Either way, I am sure Liz will not be heartbroken over the loss of the likes of you.

Very well said, QueerGirl! My take is that if Jellico Cat (stupid ass name) is not a fan, fine. But, jeeeezus, Jellico, why rain on the parade of people who do like and appreciate her? Try having another listen in between your various renditions of "Memories" - maybe you'll get it this time around (but I doubt it).

I just saw Liz in Detroit on Monday, and let me just say she has stage presence to spare. Had some witty banter with the crowd, was completely enjoying herself, and sounded GREAT. Vocally she has come a long way, but I don't even care. There is something very endearing about an artist who isn't "pitch perfect", but still can blow you away time after time with their genius and personal lyrics. Plus................she's hot! ;(p)

PhairPhreak--

Well said. I saw her in Boston, had the same reaction. In fairness to Jellico, I was a little bummed about some of her new stuff, too. But Liz has a right to make money when no-talent girly-men like Justin Timberlake do. In concert, she's still playing to her fans. And, frankly, her new stuff sounded pretty damn good live.

And yes, she was hot--the outfit she wore is still running through my mind almost two weeks later. What little outfit there actually was...

I saw the show in Indy a few nights ago, and it was sensational. Liz simply attacked the new songs. Rock Me and Extraordinary were both highlights of the show. If I didn't know better, Extraordinary could have been a track off Guyville. She 15 feet to her left.

The band was in end of tour form, the set sensational, although I could have used a few more tunes. She played about 20, including some from every album, so it's hard to ask for more I suppose.

Regradless of the tone of the new album (which I enjoy) she has not strayed much from her roots as a straighforward rocker, who happens to be hot as hell, full of prescence, wit, charm, and is a fantastic songwriter.

Long live Liz

well, i have to say two things here. first of all, a forum is a place to DISCUSS, and if you can't present both sides of an argument, than what's the point. I was a HUGE Liz Phair fan for a really long time, and don't mind one bit that Jellico is pissed off about her. Second of all, the new album does bite. Don't think she doesn't know EXACTLY what she's doing here though, she's hit VH1, she'll make more money, and hey "it's nice to have friends but it's better by far to get paid" or however it went. The only songs of any use on that album are firewalker and the one near the end that are both on bootlegs (rarities) and she's totally ruined them by overproducing them this time round. Ah well. Anyway my point is, the new album sucks, but I totally understand why she did it.

Any artist who has risen to the top ranks of the indie world is bound to hook up with a major company and make what lo-fi fans consider an overproduced album. I actually enjoy seeing Liz Phair on VH1 and hearing her hit in rotation on the radio. With all of this going on , new fans may want to investigate her older stuff. If any artist deserves a good career break then Liz certainly deserves it. Long time fans who don't like her new record have a right to their opinion, but I for one like it. I figure that there is nothing wrong with making a good album if the technology is there. There is a good chance that things may turn sour later on, that's the chance one takes, but for now her stuff is still good.....

Everybody keeps saying, "plus, she's hot." This disturbs me. That's not supposed to be such a solid part of her appeal. Not seriously, anyway. She's always been hot, but her image was like you'd have to be an idiot to think that she'd care what you think. I mean, I used to think of Liz as a woman who easily outsmarted men because they were so busy drooling all over her that they didn't even notice she was laughing at them. But I can't hear her laughing anymore. None of the lyrics in this new album give me that impression, the way her older songs did. She seems embarrassingly obsessed with sex-- this time, she's the one who's embarrassing about it, not the guys. Hot White Come? It's kind of funny, but just ultimately dumb. Read the New York Times review of the album, it's pretty much my opinion exactly. So sad. Nobody is a bigger fan than I am. I'm not giving up on her, just feeling a little let down.

Yep, it's true. Liz's new album is absolutely devastating to her real fans! It sucks. She's a SONGWRITER so what the hell is she doing having someone else write songs for her? Now she sounds like Avril Lavigne, Pink, or any other pseudo rock star. Please write your next album yourself Liz!!!
