Subject: Why does Liz owe US?

I find it interesting that so many of the "old" fans feel Liz is slighting you, or ripping you off. I'm not attacking you guys in any way, just making an observation. As a "new" fan, I think each album has been BETTER than the last and she is really hitting her stride. Exile is fine for what it was - unique and bold - but she has grown a lot since then. You can actually SING ALONG with her songs now (it started with SUPERNOVA in my book). Call it a "pop sellout" if you will, but I call it pure enjoyment. I love her voice and her lyrics and I hope album #5 is not too far off. I was psyched as hell to meet her and that would NOT have happened if she didn't care about the fans. She was sick, but made a point to attempt 2 songs and then come sign autographs. If anybody owes anybody, the OLD fans owe her and should buy the new album and embrace it. Just my 2 cents.

Couldn't have said it better myself...lucky dog, you actually got to meet her. Did you propose?

I feel sorry for Liz because it's obvious that she really wants to be a pop star after her years of indie fame. I don't fault her for that. She is "selling out," but so what? She wants to, and she's wanted to for a while.

My problem with "Liz Phair" is just that, overall, it's not a good album. And I like pop music just as much as I like indie and rock music. It's not that I don't like "Liz Phair" because I feel that she's betraying herself or her fans, but rather just because it's not a strong, memorable album.

There are a few songs I like ("HWC," which is actually an old song of Liz's; "Why Can't I;" "Extraordinary;" and "Little Digger"), but they don't make up for missteps such as the cringe-inducing "Rock Me."

Liz Phair is very capable of writing catchy, hit-worthy songs that are still unique and memorable. She doesn't have to try to sound like Avril Lavigne or any number of forgettable pop "grrls" out there.

So that's why this album disappointed me. Not because Liz wants to go pop, but because she did so pretty poorly. I'm still a huge fan, of course, and I hope that eventually she can fulfill her dream and break into the mainstream successfully. This just wasn't the album to do it.

Katie - Thanks for your kind words. I don't know what I'm more impressed with: your eloquent and mature posts, or the amazing amount of time you spend on the fan page of an arist you seem to hate. Your time might be better spent over on ebay buying a life.
