Subject: Happy Tragic Thing - can't wait!

I hate Avril Lavigne as much as the next person but the new Liz Phair album sounds fantastic on paper. I don't see any problem at all with a hugely talented, hugely underrated songwriter using commercial savvy and pop smarts to sneak their rhetoric into homes that it doesn't really "belong" in! Knowing Liz, she'll do it with tremendous style, flair and wit. Besides, she has always had a terrific natural gift for writing naggingly catchy tunes and classically melodic songcraft. The same way PJ Harvey released the most deeply complex and radically subversive record of her career in Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea (which also happened to be by far her poppiest). So I have high hopes for Happy Tragic Thing and will be sure to buy it come 20 May. Go Liz!

I was a little scared over the whole Matrix thing. I couldn't believe she would work with someone who would produce Avril. Then I realized she is not Avril. Liz has a lot more talent. I am sure she would not let that kind of stuff on her album. It may be a little more pop but, it will have her flair to it. I'm looking forward to adding it to my collection.

I'm gonna cry. I just heard the new single tonight- my friend works at a radio station. It was sooo awful, I'm sorry. I lOVE Liz, adore her, and she is the reason I play guitar, but this was just awful. It feels like it's someone else singing through her. Not Liz at all.

I completely agree with Martine. I went to lizphair.com and heard three of her new songs--she has done a complete 180 both musically and lyrically. And she's changed her image into an older version of Avril or Michelle Branch. It made me so sad to hear the poppy, contrived "Why Can't I"? She couldn't keep the Matrix's paws off her style...

Yeah, totally! I think we were all a bit spooked at first when we read Liz Phair and Avril Lavigne in the same sentence together, it just feels so... so... wrooong! Haha. But Liz has not disappointed yet and I have faith in her integrity and vision.

However, has anybody wondered what Liz would sound like covering Complicated or Sk8er Boy? Shock, horror! Lol
