I think that friends - just like everything else - come and go throughout your life. If we see life as a journey, very few people follow the exact same route, and you end up having travel companions for stretches. The people who got on the tain at the same station you did, are seldom traveling with you when you reach your thirties. That's just life. It has a sprinkling of beginnings, middles, and ends all the way through, not in the right order.

That said, I think most people have no idea what they are in for when they say 'unload your burden unto me.' They are not necessarily 'bad' friends; I think they mean well, but are ill-equipped to deal with high maintenance issues. It takes a certain type of mentality or life philosophy, I think, to be the Strong One. You'll recognize those friends by the fact that they don't ask you to confide in them; they are just conveniently there when you need them.

Consider the six characters in Friends. Who of them would carry any of the others if disaster struck?
