Thank you for your wonderful comments, it seems we share a similar taste.

" Don't you just love playing with irony and paradox? I like it because it leaves the reader open to many internal interpretations as it applies to their own lives."

I most certainly do! I love twisting the metaphorical around the metaphysical and pushing it into a surreal box of infinitely limited capacity just to watch the seams give way to a totally new sense of comprehension. Ha-ha! ;-)

"The only line that I don't grasp and doesn't seem to fit in the flow is the one about the varlet."

I used the word varlet meaning rascal or knave, aiming for an olde worlde term meaning rogue, but to a lesser degree. The loner, but with a saddened yet playful nature, again with the seemingly juxtaposed adjectives eh? I used the adjective prefix of "simple" in the vein of straightforward, uncomplicated, trouble free, etc.

So together I was aiming to show a side of the character that was like some casual, vagabond clown, the highs and lows of his mental state. Then I added "Lost forever to your world long ago" to pursue the essence of a rogue that wandered free, not chained by master, time or space. Walking in the darkened hours, lost to the normal world of mortal man.

I think I was reading a lot of Anne Rice at the time!

"I think you were successful in creating and maintaining that atmosphere."

Thank you very much, it is nice to know where I have been successful, it is equally important to know where I have been unsuccessful. There is a balance in strengths and weaknesses. Thank you again for your comments.
