BJ, if this is the best you can do then you have no argument. The FBI used to keep tabs of malcontents, known criminals and others who were outside the mainstream. On occasion, this was abused; but public awareness, maturity of the agency and oversight has all but eliminated the abuses seen in the fifties and sixties. The FBI is a law enforcement agency, not a spy network. With terrorists plotting the next attack within our shores, the FBI must be proactive or it will fail as will other government agencies charged with our protection. Are you suggesting we take a policy of allowing the terrorist plots to be played out and then tracking down the perpetrators? If we continue to hamstring our law enforcement agencies, this is exactly what is going to happen. Case in point; the recent terrorist attempts against American air carriers out of Great Brittan was foiled due to British policies which are much more aggressive than what the Patriot Act allows. There have been reports that we might not be able to stop a similar attack due to the fact that our agencies have far greater restrictions.

I highly doubt any of the federal agencies could give a damn about the guy who grows dope in his back yard to share with his friends or who is sleeping with whom. Yes, abuse could take place and for that reason we should watch our government agencies like hawks and scream bloody murder if it happens. On the other hand, how many will the next terrorist attack in our nation leave bloodied and dead?
