Ray the wire is most likly the south rail pick up wire. in most steam up until the last few years. the Loco picked up power from the north rail and the tender from the south rail, so you do need both to run. In Riverossi/ AHM's the tender connection bar is the electical connection between the loco and the tender, but most older ones it is a wire. I would say ou loco is from the 60'0 and it most likyly has a "Pittman" motor in it, good motor with lots of power
