Glad to hear you got some help James!
Not all Bachmann is bad. In fact their newer stuff in the Spectrum line is a HUGE improvement over their old cheaper stuff and reasonably priced.. Their steam is quite nice, I bought one of their Spectrum Consolidations (2-8-0) and was pleasantly surprised with the quality. If those K-4's are the newer Spectrums, go for it!
I had a hunch that the rail connections were one of the problems...also, check that there are no kinks in the rail at the connections. some of the circles aren't really circular in the cheaper track and when forced into a circle, there can be kinks at some of the joints that create problem spots. Weight is not as huge a factor as some people make it out to be, but a little extra helps out.
Always would be nice to see you. Keep an eye on the website for dates of our monthly meetings in the news section. I try and keep it current each month. Plus we hold formal operation nights once a month on Friday nights were we operate our RR like a real RR. Nice night to come and see trains running and ask some questions. Take care!
