Subject: Smash Deal for Much-Needed Offensive Punch

After watching the Steel Valley offense fall to near the bottom of the FIFL in many offensive categories, head coach/general manager Dan Jackson decided changes were necessary. "Our offense sputtered early a few games, caused the defense to get into awful situations, and we were forced to throw way too much, and further lower our ratings everywhere. This is a situation that I wasn't willing to deal with any longer, and this is a situation that I had to change. Our defense is, talent-wise, one of the FIFL's best, but we were setting ourselves to fail miserably with bad drives, bad punts, and too much time on the field with the defense."

Despite a great showing, the Smash knew moves had to be made. "Fort Wayne is still tough like everyone is, but that whole team is on a downturn right now. They aren't providing the kind of challenges I know that team can, and it made us look better than perhaps we are. Changes still needed made on our offense, and we made them."

The changes were amassed in a pair of trades. The Smash sent long-time WR Richard Scroggins and CB DaWuan Miller to Mobile for QB Mike Hohensee, FB DJ Crane and WR Ira Gooch. The Smash then sent Jason Schwab and a pick to Fort Wayne for G Bob Wegner and a lower pick.

"I don't like losing all-stars, but Scroggins gave us the opportunity to improve our offense wholesale. Hohensee and Crane are immediate starters, and Gooch will take the #3 slotback spot, as the little speedy guy that can do the big plays. Crane is going to make the run game better, because he can do it all, catching the ball on the flats and blocking. Wegner will be a tackle, and will help Briggs with his development as one of the FIFL's premier tackles. These deals are going to make the Smash a better team right away."

When asked if these moves were to try to ride the bumpy road of the schedule into the playoffs, Jackson was noncommittal. "These moves mean that the Smash is committed to winning and committed to bringing a championship to Wheeling."

The Smash continue their playoff push with a Week 10 meeting at Madison.
