NATIONAL INDOOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Stingrays unveil latest additions

By Keith Pompey

The Sun News

One of the Myrtle Beach Stingrays' main concerns this offseason was to improve an offense that ranked 22nd out of 24 National Indoor Football League teams in scoring offense.

The Stingrays may have exceeded their goal, at least on paper.

Former Detroit Lions running back Rafael Cooper, standout indoor-football quarterback Albert Higgs and place-kicker Bruce Reinecker were introduced as the latest Stingray additions Friday.

"We want to bring a winner to Myrtle Beach," said Jack Bowman, Myrtle Beach's vice president of operations. "Last year was our first year here. And we went on some recommendations of some players that weren't bad players. But we are just trying to get the best players. We have been heavily recruiting the NFL cuts and the [Canadian Football League] players.

"We are just real excited, overall, about a much improved team."

Cooper is the second running back with NFL experience to sign with Myrtle Beach during the offseason. Marquette Smith, who was the Carolina Panthers' fifth-round draft pick in 1996, signed in October.

Meanwhile, Albert, who played for the NIFL's Billings Outlaws this past season, is reunited with former teammates in wideouts Cory Grow, Jason Quinn and Mike Montoya.

"Albert and his receivers, they averaged over 50 points a game [with the Outlaws]," said Bowman. "So we are really looking for a high-powered, exciting offensive show."

Last season, Myrtle Beach averaged 32 points a game. The Stingrays compiled 2,509 yards - 1,577 passing and 932 rushing - to go with 58 touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Higgs completed 251 of 422 passes for 2,638 yards and 48 touchdowns to go with 23 interceptions.

Cooper didn't play last football last season after being cut by the Lions following training camp. However, he did play on special teams and at running back during the final eight games in 2002.

The 28-year-old even rushed eight times for 50 yards against the eventual Super Bowl champions. He finished that season with 57 yards on 12 rushes.

"I see [playing for Myrtle Beach] as an opportunity to keep my skill tight," said Cooper, who also had stints with Memphis Maniax of the XFL, Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe and spent time in the training camps of the Green Bay Packers and Tennessee Titans.

Reinicker has garnered indoor football experience while playing for the New York Dragons and the Chicago Rush of the Arena 1 Football League.

He was also a two-time NCAA Division II All-American at West Liberty State College.
