Subject: Week 7 LBB

Dateline Baton Rouge…

Hierarchy for the Louisiana franchise knew this had to be the 1st of 3 transition seasons B4 the Beast would once again claim the league title. Careful calculations resulted in the pre-draft trade that gutted the pro bowl caliber OL. The players obtained with the draft picks in this trade looked OK on paper. Last season rookies would man the OG positions, and others switched positions to compensate. All looked good B4 TC. This was a team in transition that had to be reckoned with for the title. Seemingly minor setbacks in TC and ‘ D ` reductions were disappointing, but not disastrous… such was the thinking.

2004 week 1 (17-14 at St Louis) was a pacifier. Week 2 (17-24 vs Texas) threw up a MAJOR red flag. Week 3 (16-13 at Steel Valley) went as planned. Week 4 (23-29 at Mississippi (ot) proved we were in serious trouble. Week 5 and 6 (both home game losses) were adjustment games that the football gods decided were NOT to go our way. Week 7 is pivotal for this season. We win here or assume the spoiler role for the rest of the season. There are no other options. This franchise will never entertain the tempting `let’s play for the #1 draft pick’ game.

“We’re as baffled as anyone” replied spokesperson Ann Nonymous. “We made adjustments and went beyond our comfort level to find the right formula. STILL we found a way to lose games AT HOME (sigh). We’re back on the road this week. Hopefully, we win this week and stay competitive.” Read between the line: what she DIDN’T say is 3 division losses are the max we can allow and expect to advance. This week is huge. It doesn’t help that we face the surging Texas Terminators this week. We win this week or else.

Speaking of the GULF DIVISION, kudos to Texas and Mobile. The Terminators have always been dangerous, even sans ownership. Nice to see GM Nelson H vault this franchise back to respectability. It took him one short season to turn it around. The Sea Gulls progress has been painstaking but sure. GM Mike B has his team in the thick of the race for a playoff slot. If Mobile can overcome GM Miguel C Dayton Skyhawks this week, they’ll have and excellent springboard to start the 2nd half of the 2004 season.
