Subject: WEEK 11 PREVIEW

…no reason to get excited, said the drunkard to the thief… there are many here among us who think that life is but a joke… but you and I we’ve been through that, and that is not our fate… so let us stop talking falsely know, the hour’s getting late… (thanx, Jimi, and the Minnesota dude what wrote it… [senior moment])

Dateline Baton Rouge… Advocate article…

MUST WATCH: *****

Mobile (6-4) at Madison (7-3)

MOB offense 3rd 86.0 rush - [12th] / 270.3 pass - [5th]
defense 14th 82.3 rush - [5th] / 276.2 pass - [18th]
scoring 25.7 for - [1st] / 24.4 against - [16th]
---------------------------------------------------------
MAD offense 15th 90.1 rush - [11th] / 215.0 pass - [14th]
defense 6th 102.3 rush - [14th] / 219.1 pass - [1st]
scoring 22.3 for - [6th] / 17.6 against - [2nd]

Mobile smarting after a 24 – 31 loss to Louisiana at home last week. Madison edged Fort Wayne 23 – 20 in OT at home. GM Mike Banghart certainly has done his job for Mobile. His relentless efforts have elevated the Seagulls to a higher level. However, Mobile continues to stumble in big games… this week they have yet another chance: road trip to Madison (shudder). QB Johnny Johnson faces the #1 rated pass defense this week. HB Marquette Smith looms large vs the Mad Dogs 14th rated rush defense. Balance this with a surprisingly stodgy Madison offense. QB Ray Marrow seems to run out of gas, especially late in games. The production from WR Rashaan Vanterpool has fallen off dramatically this season. HB1 Lamont Coleman is among the strongest and fastest in the league. But with 166 caries to date, it’s hard to develop a rhythm. Madison has a scary 21.1 punt return average with 2 TDs despite having the highest number (39) to date. They also are the best in the league defending punts and returning kickoffs. There is an old adage: defense and special teams win championships… if that is true Madison is tracking well. This one is tough… Madison at home, Mobile terrible on the road… Line set at Madison –2.

Honolulu (6-4) at Portland (4-6)

HON offense 7th 110.6 rush - [3rd] / 232.2 pass - [9th]
defense 15th 98.2 rush - [11th] / 260.6 pass - [17th]
scoring 21.8 for - [8th] / 19.5 against - [6th]
---------------------------------------------------------
POR offense 6th 66.3 rush - [17th] / 278.9 pass - [1st]
defense 18th 109.7 rush - [16th] / 259.8 pass - [16th]
scoring 20.6 for - [12th] / 25.0 against - [17th]

Honolulu beat Lincoln at home 20 – 17. Portland was embarrassed 20 – 48 at Colorado. OG Brandon Bergstesser might sit this week with a hyper-extended knee. Last chance for the Prowlers… deal division leader Honolulu an L or wait ‘till next season. Portland has fallen off the radar screen defensively. They need to re-group and re-assign personnel soon. R DB Pat McGuirk appears to be the best option at S1, Quincy Guy at S2. Doug McFadden is fine at S3, but Derf Deese and Damien Redmond need to be relegated to backups and special teams. Defensive numbers have changed, so GMs need to evaluate and re-distribute talent. This faux pas and a week D line explain the lopsided losses of late. IF Portland gives the defense a face-lift, and allow the youngsters a chance, QB Albert Higgs and company may be able to keep the Prowlers in it this week. Line set at Portland –3.

BEST OF THE REST: ***

Mississippi (7-3) at Fort Wayne (4-6)

MIS offense 4th 123.7 rush - [2nd] / 229.9 pass - [12th]
defense 12th 89.6 rush - [8th] / 248.4 pass - [12th]
scoring 23.3 for - [3rd] / 20.9 against - [10th]
---------------------------------------------------------
FWS offense 18th 79.2 rush - [15th] / 206.8 pass - [17th]
defense 7th 98.8 rush - [12th] / 223.6 pass - [5th]
scoring 18.1 for - [16th] / 20.3 against - [7th]

Mississippi beat Springfield 28 – 23 at home. CB Sammy Walker continues to rehab a neck sprain this week. Fort Wayne squandered a serviceable lead and lost 20 – 23 at Madison. DE Harold Williams may miss this one with strained hamstring. Believe it or not: Mississippi is in the driver’s seat for the Gulf Division title… reason being: favorable schedule. HB Damon Benning should return this week and wreak havoc on the beleaguered Safari. Line set at Mississippi –2.

Colorado (5-5) at Black Hills (6-4)

COL offense 14th 104.5 rush - [7th] / 213.7 pass - [15th]
defense 2nd 84.9 rush - [7th] / 220.0 pass - [2nd]
scoring 21.0 for - [11th] / 20.4 against - [8th]
---------------------------------------------------------
BLK offense 8th 106.3 rush - [6th] / 236.3 pass - [8th]
defense 3rd 70.1 rush - [1st] / 237.3 pass - [10th]
scoring 24.5 for - [2nd] / 20.7 against - [9th]

Colorado ran rampant over Portland 48 – 20 at Colorado. Black Hills bowed to Utah 20 – 26 at Utah. Colorado pretty much out of it, Black Hills needs to keep up with Jonses. Line set at Black Hills –5.

Texas (4-6) at Wichita (7-3)

TEX offense 10th 90.5 rush - [10th] / 247.4 pass - [6th]
defense 11th 83.1 rush - [6th] / 249.7 pass - [14th]
scoring 22.2 for - [7th] / 22.0 against - [11th]
---------------------------------------------------------
WCH offense 9th 108.8 rush - [5th] / 231.1 pass - [11th]
defense 9th 93.9 rush - [9th] / 230.4 pass - [7th]
scoring 19.4 for - [13th] / 17.6 against - [3rd]

Texas fell to Dayton 17 – 10 at home. Wichita nipped Fargo 10 – 8 at home. DT Doug Lytle sprained and ankle and is questionable this week. Texas has taken its’ lumps this season, but NEVER count this team out… they always come to play. Wichita has made it look easy this season… a W here is key for the Warlords playoff picture. Line set at Wichita –3.

STILL SOME POSSIBILTIES FOR DIEHARDS: *1/2

Green Bay (3-7) at Louisiana (7-3)

GBY offense 17th 64.5 rush - [18th] / 223.1 pass - [13th]
defense 10th 100.2 rush - [13th] / 224.2 pass - [6th]
scoring 16.2 for - [18th] / 22.7 against - [13th]
---------------------------------------------------------
LOU offense 2nd 95.0 rush - [9th] / 273.7 pass - [3rd]
defense 4th 94.5 rush - [10th] / 221.3 pass - [4th]
scoring 21.5 for - [10th] / 18.3 against - [5th]

Green Bay wowed Steel Valley at the buzzer 20 – 17 at home. Louisiana grounded the Seagulls 31 – 24 at Mobile. Green Bay traveled to Louisiana last season in week 11 and bit the Beast 30 - 26… the Beast NEVER forgets. This is a far different team from last season, but management has added the humiliation of the losing experience last season to preparation for this game. Owner/GM Jimmy Hanlon took a sabbatical last season due to former ownership issues… that is now in the remote past and Hanlon is now actively involved with management and coaches issues RE: this game. Regardless, the Bombers are a dangerous team, especially this late in the season. They have no fear, nothing to play for save the 1st pick in the next draft, and are geared up to relax and let it all hang out. The retooled roster is formidable, but still in a state of flux as they try to find combinations that will ensure success in future seasons. Talent wins out here… and the Beast has more of it. Line set at Louisiana –6.

Utah (6-4) at Fargo (3-7)

UTA offense 1st 109.2 rush - [4th] / 278.4 pass - [2nd]
defense 5th 70.2 rush - [2nd] / 249.8 pass - [15th]
scoring 22.7 for - [5th] / 18.0 against - [4th]
---------------------------------------------------------
FGO offense 13th 82.2 rush - [13th] / 244.2 pass - [7th]
defense 8th 82.3 rush - [4th] / 241.2 pass - [11th]
scoring 18.8 for - [15th] / 23.3 against - [14th]

Utah beat Black Hills 26 – 20 at home. Fargo lost at Wichita 8 – 10. Utah will prevail… Fargo just a tad short of ready for prime time. Line set at Utah –7.

Lincoln (2-8) at Springfield (5-5)

LIN offense 12th 98.8 rush - [8th] / 231.9 pass - [10th]
defense 17th 134.5 rush - [18th] / 232.8 pass - [8th]
scoring 18.9 for - [14th] / 23.7 against - [15th]
---------------------------------------------------------
SPR offense 5th 79.9 rush - [14th] / 272.7 pass - [4th]
defense 13th 106.8 rush - [15th] / 249.6 pass - [13th]
scoring 22.9 for - [4th] / 22.4 against - [12th]

Lincoln lost 17 – 20 at Honolulu. DE Andre Dudley, recovering from a hip pointer, probable this week. Springfield lost at Mississippi 23 – 28. Springfield has faded lately, but look for respect granted a .500 team. Line set at Springfield –2.

Steel Valley (1-9) at Dayton (7-3)

STV offense 16th 75.8 rush - [16th] / 213.3 pass - [16th]
defense 16th 127.3 rush - [17th] / 233.8 pass - [9th]
scoring 17.9 for - [17th] / 27.0 against - [18th]
---------------------------------------------------------
DAY offense 11th 132.2 rush - [1st] / 199.9 pass - [18th]
defense 1st 74.9 rush - [3rd] / 221.0 pass - [3rd]
scoring 21.8 for - [9th] / 15.8 against - [1st]

Steel Valley collapsed 17 – 20 at Green Bay. Dayton beat Texas 17 – 10 at Texas. “ …say it ain’t so, Joe…” Steel Valley playing for the 1st round draft pick season. Line set at Dayton –9.
