Descendants of Donal Cam O'Sullivan Beare assembled at the ruins of Dunboy Castle, Castletownbere, Co Cork - his former seat of power - on Monday, December 30 2002, to re-enact a vital chapter of Irish history.

Several of them, just like their ancestors did, came ashore in curraghs to commemorate their Irish clan's long march 400 years ago after the defeat of Irish and Spanish armies at Kinsale.

Their Irish clan ancestors, about 1,000 men, women, and children, started their long 250 mile march, in the dead of winter, in 1602, from the Beare Peninsula in west Cork, but only 35 surviviors, including one woman, reached the relative safety of Leitrim, to be welcomed by their friends of the O'Rourke clan.

The present day marchers, about 60, some from America and other lands, if all went well today are about 32 miles from the starting point. They too are heading towards Leitrim, a fifteen day march. They will pass through eleven counties - Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Galway, Roscommon, Sligo and Leitrim.

It is expected that many good wishers and supporters will join in the march somewhere along the route. If you live near any of the places mentioned, perhaps you will turn up to give the brave marchers a warm Cead mile failte!
