Date Posted: 04:50:45 01/03/03 Fri Because of Nice and earlier EU treaties, the Dublin government has virtually no powers to protect what remains of the Irish fishing industry,or the communities depending on it, according to "Alive", the Irish Catholic newspaper which is distributed free to 260,000 homes throughout Ireland. Last month, "Alive" reported how the 26 counties received 39 billion Euros from the EU since 1974, but paid back more than 120 billion Euros. In that disastrous deal the Dublin government signed away Irish fishing rights, spawning the present crisis. Irish farmers are next for the chop. The German economy is in a shambles, no longer able to fund EU agriculture, much less the millions of new farmers joining the EU. American investment has dropped drastically in Ireland, but is soaring in Eastern European countries. Many foreign-owned industries in Ireland are sacking Irish workers, departing for the east, deepening worker's insecurity. There has been a net loss of 4,000 Irish jobs, the first time a loss has been recorded in ten years. Campaigners against the Nice Treaty warned that all this would happen. None of us can truely say it was a secret. What price a united Ireland, if we are being ruled from Brussels? The Irish fishing crisis gives a glimpse of the extent to which the Irish people are ruled by Brussels bureaucrats. The Dublin government, despite appearances, is just a glorified county council The main opposition parties, Fine Gael and Labour, backed Nice, so they can say nothing now. All the national media in Ireland, backed Nice, so they also say nothing. And believe it or not, some supporters of Republican Sinn Fein are in favour of foreign investment in Ireland, despite the heavy Irish job losses before Christmas.
