In trying to deal with these issues, I saw they might be interdependent, but I addressed them because they all came up in the thread I was responding to.

I hadn't thought about the broader issue of the priest being an intermediary between the parishoner and God. But then there was a time when the congregation wasn't trusted to read and interpret the Bible as well and the Church survived that transition.

Again, the position of the priest is a matter of custom and not dictated by the Bible. Handled properly, the Church can deal with changes in the priest's function within the Church. The driving force of Catholism is it's faith in God and in Christ. If the people who are the Church remember and focus on that, they will find the needed solutions to this problem and the Church will survive this crisis.
