The sun sets behind the USS Arizona Memorial in a file photo from Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at
Pearl Harbor in Honolulu. The memorial, honoring Americans killed during the attack that
plunged the nation into World War II, draws 1.5 million visitors a year, many awed by its
symbolism. But when the gleaming-white, 184-foot open structure was completed, exactly 40
years ago on Saturday, there was more ridicule than rapture. A ceremony and floral tribute is
set for Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2002, to mark the anniversary of the monument,
which was designated a national historical landmark in 1989. (AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill, File)
