Way back in the old days (she says as she leans upon her cane) when we spent hours making punch cards in order to program the computer for our scienctific research. There was no such thing as available software for analyzing our research projects. All the universities computers were huge monstrosities that filled whole rooms. As a junior researcher, I had to come in the middle of the night to get any computer time where I could feed in my programs and process my data.

Much of the time it seemed easier to put together data with flow charts, a calculator and a slide rule.
