Cheers Pat,

Actually, I'm not so sure about this 25% response rate. 25% of locations is one thing, but do you know what percentage of potential human responders replied? As you are using your results to estimate the % of the human population who experience paranormal events, I think that's the figure most people will be interested in. I suspect that, as questionnaires were left in open spaces and sent to commercial premises, you can't know the total number of people who might have replied to any given questionnaire, but who didn't.

Also, doesn't your technique leave your study open to problems of response bias? If a questionnaire lands in an office of 100 people, 99 of whom have never had a paranormal experience but one of whom has, I think we know which member of staff is most likely to return the questionnaire to you!

Would it not have been better to have adopted a more conventional epidemiological approach and selected a random sample of bristolians from the electoral roll to send questionnaires to? Then you would have had a firm idea of response rate, incidence of paranormal events and known the demographic characteristics of responders and non-responders. If the incidence of paranormal events really is 8%, this wouldn't have cost you too much in stamps!
