I am 17 years old and have gone to private and public schools. I think public is a lot better. I went to a private school frome Pre-k-3rd grade. After the kids started picking on me because I lived in a small apartement and wore my sisters old hand me down uniform my mom looked for another private school, but the only one close enough, we could not afford. I begged my mom all summer to let me try public school. She thought it would just be worse, but in public school I made friends who also did not have a lot of money and didn't care how I dressed or where I lived. In 8th grade we had to move to the city becasue my mom got a better job there. She made me go to private school because of the crime in the public schools. Finally after bugging her for 2 years she let me go to public school for 10th grade. I'm now in 11th grade and doing great there. There will always be bullys in any school and your kid can't escape that because they are dressed the same as everyone else. If it's not your clothes the kids will pick on something else, where you live, your weight, your grades, anything they can find wrong with you. Private school is so expensive too, the classes may be smaller, but my mom did not feel like i was getting a better educdation there. The teachers at private school were no nicer than the teachers at public school, and normally if a teacher dosen't like a kid, the kid has made the teacher hate them. I get all the one on one attention I need. Beleive me, If you call your childs teacher and tell her he needs help, she will give him extra attention, help after school, or arrange for him to get help from an aide. I hated the uniforms, they were embarrasing and ugly. I felt like an idiot wearing a mauroon jumper and saddle shoes when I was 13 years old. Kids will pick on you if your uniform is used, or old. and it limits the childs creativity. also uniforms do not help keep intruders out of the school or keep students in. It's very easy to get a schools uniform even if you arent a student, and a student can easily go to the bathroom and change out of their uniform. plus people can lie and say they are a relative of the student. Sorry my message is so long, but I feel very strongly that public school is better.

As a public high school teacher, I have seen the stuggles that students coming from private schools have had. Some of these problems are from the increased workload, but many are from being around different students. I am a strong supporter of public schools. I think that private schools offer students a diminished view of the world around them. I think that some of the most important aspects of school is not the academic side, but the social side. By being around students that are different than you, you develop an understanding for those around you and learn to accept the differences between you and others. True, you have to deal with the cliques and pressures and there might be some students who are troublemakers, but you will come across that anywhere. By sending a student to private school, they don't get the opportunity to experience those with different views from themselves, and often do not follow the same standards as public schools. Without statewide exams that public school students have to take, a private school can alter the curriculum and leave out important details that students from public schools may be exposed to. I have two cousins that attend a private Christian school locally, and have grown up with only friends who share the same views as they do. Their parents bring up the safety and personalization of the schools, as I have seen on several postings on this board. Public schools are safe as well. Please don't let a few school violence issues dissuade you from public schools; these instances could have occured just as easily at a private school. Also, if you are worried about personalization; public schools can offer just as much (depending on the teacher). While class sizes may be a little larger, many teachers, at least at the high school level, offer after school personalized tutoring for any student interested in attending. Look at all of the parts to the equation before making any kind of decision.

Hello! Seems everywhere you turn these days, there are many requests for help coming from those who want to help those affected by the Hurricane, appropriately so. If, in addition to assisting major organizations like American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, etc, you would still like to help someone out... or... still looking for who you want to assist, please read on.
In the small working-class community known as the Back Bay area, among the many buildings that took on water from the wind-driven storm surge was a little school called Sacred Heart Elementary. Eight feet of water and wind caused the school to take on major damage. But the school held on. A large portion of the D'Iberville area was left devastated. Despite the building standing through the hurricane, the school lost everything. Books are strewn all throughout the muck, as are their supplies and teaching materials.
It is admirable and wonderful that schools are accepting the children who were unable to attend school because of the devastation of the hurricane. Understandably, though, there are still many awaiting the openings of their schools because they don't want to start over somewhere new. Or, don't have that opportunity. One of the most important things that we can do is move on with our lives. Help others as we can, rebuild, start new dreams and new hopes for the future. Our school wants to open on October 3rd.
Can you help in one of many ways while the families concentrate on their homes and replacing what they lost? We can concentrate on what they cannot: getting those schools open.
Monetary contributions made out to and sent directly to the school is one way, and of course, the quickest.
Another is to add the school as your recipient from your Target Red Card purchases, where the school will get 1% of what you spend at Target and 1/2% of what you spend elsewhere on your Target Visa card. (The other card is the store's card, the Target Guest Card). Please see Target.com.

I have a different view on private schools, at lease the one my children have been involved with. Three of our children have been enrolled in Christa McAuliffe Academy (CMA). It is a private school on the internet. They have mentors and students all over the world. Their mentors (teachers) are all certified and very professional. This is not the same as homeschooling. The students graduate with a high school diploma. They have specialized curriculum as well as their traditional curriculum K-12. Our children's mentor lives in Hawaii. They also have CMA Adventures where students & parents have the opportunity to travel to various parts of the world and actually visit the places they are studying about. The students are required to meet once a week with their mentor and other students for class called "virtual classroom". Here they get to know each other, and have the classroom experience. There are no uniforms to buy, no peer pressure, etc. My children have taken some classes at the public school such as sign language. They have also been involved in sports with the public school, and they have a great social life, without all the "garbage" that goes on in public school. I totally support Private schools. I've been in both systems and privite in emesly better. Yes their are problems with teasing and 'bad apples' but that is going to happen everywhere, why not get a good education while learning how to deal with it. Also, don't base your ideas of private school on Crule Intentions. It's a movie. Yes bad stuff does happen in private school but not to that extreem. Private schools are tough and work load is intense but it pays off in the future. I think a good education is the best gift you can give your child.

Hi, I don't know when you posted your question, but I'll answer anyway.
I went to two different private schools from 3-8th grades and was only sent back to public school because my parents could no longer afford private.
I totally think private is much better. The classes are smaller and the teachers are more attentive and caring. Public school teachers may start out caring but they have so many students to deal with and the pressure to push the kids thru to the next grade, that they lose the idea of what they're really there for. Your children will recieve a much better education in private schools due to the fact that they are monitored more closely and you will get exactly what you pay for. You are in control. Good luck!
