Because American Express has a killer customer service department, and they got a friend's money back in a similar situation. She just called AmEx, complained, and a day later they called her back and said "your card has been credited for the full amount". They do that, and there isn't a travel agent in the world that doesn't fear them.

Other credit card companies do similar things, and if you paid with a credit card they may be able to help you. AmEx has the best reputation, but others might be nearly as good.
