Yes...as a movie, it kicked. As a film on its own, 'twas a wonderful work of cinematic brilliance.
Too bad that's all that most people in the theater seemed to care about.

I mean, when I realized that we were dealing with Evil!Faramir, I had to bite my tongue to keep myself from screaming "NOOOOOOOO! NOT FARAMIR TOO!" out loud in the theater. WHY, PETER?! WHY?! WHY MAKE FARAMIR A CLONE OF EVIL!BOROMIR?! Faramir use to be a KIND man! He was HOSPITIBALE to the hobbits! And he certainley did NOT TAKE THEM TO OSGILIATH! Grrrrrr...

And WHY the lack of Eomer? I was looking forward to ogling him! *pouts* Also, WHY did he threaten to cut off Gimli's head when Gimli asked for his name? It USE to be because Gimli insulted his intelligence! GOD!

Speaking of Gimli...I was cringing every time he made a bad joke. Gimli+Comic Relief=Very Pissed Off Insanity

The Ents...waaaaaaaay too hasty. Oh yes. I liked their portrayal, but they were much too hasty. And unreasonable. It took them *that* long to figure out that Merry and Pippin weren't orcs? Oi vey...

There was no Shelob, which would have been the perfect way to end TTT-a great cliffhanger. But noooooo, we must ALWAYS have HAPPY endings...I know a lot of movie-fans who are going to be very depressed when Frodo sails off to Valinor at the end of RotK.

Arwen. She didn't need to be there. And the kissing scene was too long. And she appeared to much. And Elrond scared me. MAKE THEM GO 'WAY!

Aragorn's "Death" Scene: Completley unnecessary. Shouldn't have been done. Only used to pull emotions from audience and give Liv Tyler more screen time. Other than that, this event never should have taken place. EVER.

Rohan. No complaints. ROHAN GOES! ^_^ I liked Theoden a lot, and Theodred's burial. Tiny complaint: the guy playing Theodred looked like he was in his twenties. Loved Shadowfax, and liked the usage of Old English much. And my favorite poem--"Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?"--made it in. Eowyn was spiffy-cool, and Edoras and the Riders of Rohan score practically brought tears to my eyes. Yay. ^_^

Elves at Helm's Deep and Theoden's "exorcism": Grrrr. Serious "Grrrr" factor there. Just like Aragorn's "Death" scene: shouldn't have happened.

So...I think that Jackson deifinitley strayed further from the books than necessary to create TTT. And in doing this, I'm sure he knows that he has upset a lot of book fans.

Of course, that's just my opinion.
