Subject: what is hell?

is hell the final burning of all sin in the flesh or is it more like a perpetual existence to which there is no free will present to choose a path other than death? i would think the latter seeing how the peace of a true death is now denied that lost soul; what greater punishment is there other than to endure eternity with the weight of your sins convicting your soul to endless suffering?
