Siting there in the line up i held back the tears...what a fantastic ride I had just had. Saying to myself inside my head, "Ok god this is his last chance, please dont take it away from him."
"Riders you are Excused from the areana to the paddock."announded the announcer.
As we plooded our way through the outgate I looked for a place were i could stop to see the paddock announcer.
Ring Ring, that dreaded sound for all exibitors. That sound only ment two things, either you made it or you didn’t. All fell Quiet at that instant. The top ten results had come in. All the trainers and grooms crowded the phone in hope for a glimse of the top ten pick. I looked up at Justin as he turned around. He had that blank look on his face of dissapointment. " I didn't Make it!?!" I said in disbelief. Just then he gave me the thumbs up, and just at that moment I was called in to the areana, I had made it. “Congratulations to entry number 333 Marine.” As we cantered on in I could hear the titanic theam being played and the crowed cheering, you get this feeling of “like wow. “
After all the other riders in the top ten have been called in and had their pictures taken and recieved their ribbons, it was time to call out the reserve champion. The announcer started “ This mare is a chip off the old block, Please congradulate Vivacious Lee, out 2002 Youth National Reserve Champion!”
There is this sensation that I think that every rider gets when they see another rider win a national title. It’s kind of hard to explane but its like you get this cold chill that runs down the back of your neck and through your arms. You cant help but smile at this site. Some ones dreams had come true.
After the pictures were taken and huggs were exchanged, it was now time to call the Champion. The whole areana fell into a deadly scilence, so Scilent that you could heara pin drop. “ This class started out with a total of 16 horses,” The announcers voice eckoed off of every nook and krany that it could find. “ but now it is singled down to one. Our 2002 Youth National Champion is...” the pause seemed to last forever. “MARINE!!!”
My mouth dropped open and the tears just came pooring down my face. I bent down and gave him the biggest hug that i could give him. So many times has this horse tried to win but always came up a little short. He gave a total 203% all of the time and finally he was getting rewarded for it. As we made our way to the winners circle the stands seemed to empty as people flooded into the areana to get there picture taken with him. My parents were crying, my trainer was jumping up and down with excitement, and my friends demanded huggs. All that I could do was cry and cry. Marine was finally given his roses. A huge blanket o roses were draped over his sholders and accross his neck. I think at this time he knew that he had won too, his whole body relaxed and his ears were pricked forward. The picture was taken and then it was time for the victory pass. Marine knew what time it was, it was his favorite thing about showing; everyone could tell, it was time for him to show everyone that he was the best. As he cantered down the rail the Marine’s Hymn was playing and it seemed to everyone that he was cantering to the beat of the music. Walking out into the padock many people were in tears because a dream had come true. Who would have thought that dreams do come true on the back of a white stallion.
