Has Scorpie really changed--"mellowed" is the way you phrased it--or do we just understand him and his motivations better?

Of course, everytime I think I *know* him, something happens that tells me I'm dead wrong.
For instance, when John was trying to get the chip out, and Scorpie left him lying on the operating table spouting gibberish, it seemed so terribly out of character to me. Of all his options--killing John, capturing him, or helping him to escape--leaving him there seemed like the least Scorpie thing to do.
