so it is 6'4" wing stephen tyree. and let me just say this now... i am VERY excited about this kid.

and yes, i found out from the wonderful press release on the bucknell website. its up! (and villanova on espn360... very cool!)

anyway, i dont know that stephen is ever going to be a prolific scorer. but he may be the best pure athlete to ever put on the orange and blue. he is also an amazing defender. and on top of that? he was recruited by schools like stanford, northwestern and boston college. if they were interested in him, and he had interest in them, id say that means he is a kid with a good head on his shoulders.

and just look at him... he is going to be a man among boys in the patriot league! (and can we please sneak him onto the football field?)

welcome to bucknell!

i saw his name on rivals recently with a list of quality schools in the running. at the time i had the impression he was being recruited more for football. that was based solely on their listing a football position rather than baskeball. went back today and looked, he is listed as a point guard, so who knows what sport BC, Iowa et. al. were interested in recruiting him for. anyway, he certainly completes the recuiting class in style.

stanford, at least initially, was looking at him in both sports. iowa was after him as a wide reciever and i wouldnt be surprised if the other schools were doing the same. either way, that shows you the type of athlete stephen is.

an article from two years ago stated he could play both the point and off guard positions. with his size (he is listed between 6'3" and 6'5") id be surprised if he ended up at the 1. regardless, he looks to be someone who can bring defense off the bench from day one (any time you sign someone who gets 'best defender' awards at five-star camps its a good thing... even if it only shows hustle) and hopefully develop his offensive game (he is very, very raw) for when he will really be needed in 2007-2008.

Eric, it seems like you have more info on Tyree than what is in the press release, e.g. "best defender" award, article from 2 years ago, best pure athlete, schools that were recruiting him, etc.

Are there some articles that you can link here? Or is this info from some contacts you have? Any more info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

After I posted, I found a lot more articles. My search at work automatically goes to MSN, which apparently does a terrible job. When I googled it, I found 4x as much info. He does sound like a great athlete. I also found a fairly recent post on the BC Scout forum, where a regular poster said they were after Tyree for hoops:

"BC will be keeping a eye on Stephen Tyree a 5A all-district selection last season. Tyree can play either guard position. He was once a lanky guard during his sophmore but has worked out over the past two years to get bigger in order to be a force on the gridiron. The kid is known to shoot lights out and is built with long arms which makes him a good defender and is a great rebounder on the offensive glass for a guard. When he was a Sophmore he was considered as one of the top players in the state of Texas. Tyree is also a free safety on the football field and is being tracked by alot of teams. Senior Class President and wants to attend a school with good academics. He was feeling Stanford going into the summer but has lost interest. It will be hard for him to decide if he wants to play both or one of the sports in college."

i just spent about half an hour on google earlier this afternoon. i wont go back and look for all of the articles (there are only about four pages to look through if you put his name in quotes and follow it with basketball), but i will fill in what i remember from memory.

there was an article on stephens high school team heading into the playoffs when stephen was a sophomore. he was described as the best player on the team and perhaps one who could play at either guard position.

stephen won his 'best defender' award at a five-star camp hosted by robert morris university between his sophomore and junior seasons.

as a pure athlete, i am just going by his success as both a football and basketball player. he definitely would have had the opportunity to play 1-a football... and when youre getting looks from schools like iowa as a wide reciever, that says a lot. thats just my take, though.

as for schools, that can be found on rivals.com... except for stanford, which i found on a texas high school football message board.

again, just google "stephen tyree" basketball or something similar and youll find everything i was able to glean. a football piece from november 23rd even stated he was bucknell bound.

I have seen this kid play both sports in person. I am suprised he wasnt beeing recruted by powerhouses. This man amoung boys is a true hoss. He will be a great player. He is dunking over people in basketball and catching touchdowns and catching interceptions left and rigt. He is also a very smart kid and is an extremly hard worker.
