There is lots of information on those topics
on the HRS webpage ( House Rabbit Society )
at www.rabbit.org

Long nails can grow inwards, can get infected and yes, can cause problems. She should get them clipped. I've met a bunny owner with the same problem....I clipped them myself for this person.

Also, there are some disagreements on the topic of wood shavings. Cedar is definitely the most harmful to rabbits urinary tracts as has been proven in scientific reports. However, there is no hard evidence that pine is harmful to rabbits' urinary tracts. I use pine and always have ( as it helps to absorb..I use very little on top of my Yesterday's News recycled litter ) and I've never had any problems with my rabbits and their urinary systems. However, there are many contrasting opinions on this topic. I wouldn't suggest anything to the owner on this topic except for the fact that recycled paper litters are very effective- Yesterday's News is excellent ( it is very absorbent and reduces the smell ) and then you need less wood shavings.

I hope this helps..you may want to print some stuff out for this person from the House Rabbit Society website and suggest that they get the handbook from the House Rabbit Society. It is a great handbook and has just about everything that a bunny owner could ask in it :)
